Searching for the field equations of general relativity, Einstein was confident that these could naturally result in agreement with Mach's ideas on the material origin of inertia. However, when, with the important assistance of the mathematician Marcel Grossman, he was able to find tensor field equations, he was forced to struggle facing several problems to overcome the apparent Machian failure of his preliminary gravitation theory. Einstein's strategies to implement Mach's 'relativity of inertia' included highly restrictive boundary conditions, limiting general covariance, and, finally, modified closed cosmology. This article surveys this entangled history.eng
