DESCUBRIMIENTO DE UNA NUEVA ESPECIE DE ATELOPUS (BUFONIDAE) PARA COLOMBIA: ¿UNA LUZ DE ESPERANZA O EL OCASO DE LOS SAPOS ARLEQUINES?

Abstract

Se describe y nombra una nueva especie de anuro del género Atelopus de la Cordillera Oriental de Colombia. Atelopus mittermeieri sp. nov. difiere del resto de las especies del género en la Cordillera por su particular color ventral, rojo encendido. El hallazgo de una población densa y al parecer "saludable" resulta intrigante, ya que de las otras 3 especies registradas en la región no se han presentado observaciones recientes, lo cual hace temer un colapso en sus poblaciones. El reporte de esta nueva especie abre el camino para el estudio y conservación de los sapitos arlequines en Colombia.

A new species of the genus Atelopus from the Cordillera Oriental region of Colombia is described and named. The pale red ventral coloration distinguishes Atelopus mittermeieri sp. nov. from other species of the genus in the region. The population appears to be large. This is especially intriguing as it is the only recent study of an anuran species in the region. There have been no long-term studies of anuran populations in the Cordillera region; therefore, population stability is impossible to predict. Potentially, a future collapse in a population may go undetected without further study. It is hoped that the finding of this new species might open the way for the study and conservation of harlequin toads in Colombia.
