The geochemical balance for the upper basin of the Medellín – Porce River (Antioquia) was obtained from chemical and physical tests on rainwater and runoff samples collected approximately every 15 days between 07/04/00 and 02/16/ 01. A balance was found in the concentrations of ions in the Medellín River in both the dry and wet seasons. It was estimated that runoff contributes 88% of the main dissolved solids leaving the basin (H CO, SiO, Ca+2, Na+, Mg+2, K+), the order of relative mobility is: Ca>Mg> SiO >Na>K and that the percentage of dissolved Mg doubles the world averages for waters that drain plutonic and metamorphic rocks. The weathering rate of silica was ~138 kg/ha/year, and ~48 kg/ha/year for the sum of the main dissolved major cations. |
